About the author

Born in Valença do Minho on July 13, 1856, José Augusto Vieira was a Portuguese writer associated with the naturalist current of the late 19th century. He is especially known for writing about the Minho region, returning again and again to its places, customs, and everyday life.

He also trained in medicine at the Escola Médico-Cirúrgica do Porto and went on to serve as a military doctor. That mix of literary sensibility and medical discipline seems to have shaped the sharp observation found in his work.

Among the books linked to his name are Fototipias do Minho, O Minho Pittoresco, and the novel A Divorciada. He died in Porto on July 13, 1890, at just 34 years old, leaving behind a body of work that still stands out for its close attention to a particular corner of Portugal.
