Born in Valença do Minho on July 13, 1856, José Augusto Vieira was a Portuguese writer of the late 19th century. He is remembered above all for writing about Minho, the northern region he knew closely, and for turning its scenery and traditions into the heart of his work.
He belonged to the naturalist current of his time, with a clear interest in observing people, places, and social habits in concrete detail. Alongside his literary work, sources indicate that he trained in medicine in Porto, showing how broad his intellectual life was even though his writing career was relatively short.
Vieira died in Porto on July 13, 1890, the day he turned 34. Though his life was brief, he left a distinct portrait of provincial Portuguese life that still makes him a notable figure in 19th-century Portuguese literature.
