About the author

Born in 1856 in the municipality of Vieira do Minho, José Augusto Vieira became known as a poet, novelist, and journalist in Portugal. He studied in Braga and later in Porto, where he began publishing writing and working in the press.

His literary career moved between journalism and creative writing, and he became especially associated with the landscapes, people, and traditions of Minho. That regional focus gave his work a strong local color while also helping preserve a sense of place for later readers.

Vieira died in 1890, still relatively young, but he left behind poetry and prose that kept his name alive in Portuguese letters. He is often remembered as a writer whose work joined literary ambition with a close, affectionate attention to northern Portugal.
