About the author

Born in São Luís, Maranhão, on August 3, 1854, José Augusto Corrêa was a Brazilian poet, philologist, professor, and customs inspector. Sources from the Academia Maranhense de Letras and the Portuguese-language Wikipedia entry agree that he spent much of his life active in education, journalism, and public service in his home state.

He wrote for Maranhão newspapers such as Pacotilha and Revista Maranhense, taught at the Liceu Maranhense, and became one of the founding names associated with the Academia Maranhense de Letras, where he held chair 17. His career suggests a writer deeply involved in the cultural life of São Luís, with interests that reached beyond poetry into language, criticism, and civic debate.

Corrêa died in São Luís on February 16, 1919. His books remain available through public-domain archives, and he is remembered above all as part of the generation that helped shape Maranhão’s literary institutions.
