About the author

Born in Amsterdam in 1864, Joseph Loopuit became known as a Social Democratic Workers' Party organizer, propagandist, and writer. He was active in the Dutch labor movement and used both speeches and pamphlets to explain political ideas to a broad audience.

His books focused on socialism, anarchism, Christianity and labor, and the history of socialist thought. Among the works still remembered are Karl Marx en zijne voorgangers, Het anarchisme in de arbeidersbeweging, and Christelijke vakaktie in theorie en praktijk, which show his interest in the big arguments shaping workers' politics in his time.

Loopuit died in Amsterdam in 1923. Today, his writings remain valuable for readers interested in the early Dutch socialist movement and the spirited public debates that surrounded it.
