About the author

Born on June 18, 1857, in Säräisniemi, Jooseppi Mustakallio was originally named Josef Schwartzberg. He became a Finnish minister and later served as the fourth mission director of the Finnish Missionary Society, a role that placed him at the center of Finnish missionary work in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Alongside his church work, he was active as a writer and translator. His books and other writings helped introduce readers to religious ideas and to places and events beyond Finland, making him part of the broader literary and cultural world around the missionary movement.

Mustakallio died on April 20, 1923, in Parikkala. Remembered today both for his religious leadership and his printed work, he belongs to a generation of Finnish authors whose writing was closely tied to public life, education, and faith.
