About the author

Serving as a lieutenant colonel in the Marine Corps Reserve, he has also worked on extended active duty as deputy director of the Marine Corps History & Museums Division. According to his publisher biography, he spent sixteen years on active duty as an infantry officer and historian, earned a master's degree in military history from Ohio State, and later received a law degree from Duke University.

He is the author of Once a Legend, a biography of Major General Merritt "Red Mike" Edson, and Chesty, about Lieutenant General Lewis B. Puller. His first book was recognized with the Marine Corps' prize for best book of the year.

The combination of military service, academic training, and archival work gives his writing a grounded, readable style that appeals to listeners interested in American military history and the people who shaped it.
