After graduating from Miami University in Ohio in 1978, he was commissioned in the Marine Corps Reserve and entered active duty in 1981. Over a long military career, he served as an infantry officer and historian, including command assignments, amphibious deployments, and work teaching history at the U.S. Naval Academy.
He later held senior history roles for the Marine Corps, the U.S. Army Center of Military History, and the Department of Defense. Along the way, he earned a master's degree in military history from Ohio State and a law degree from Duke University.
As an author, he is known for books including Once a Legend, Chesty, and USMC: A Complete History. His writing stands out for making military history readable and human, with a strong eye for leadership, character, and the realities of service.
