About the author

Born in Iceland in 1857, Jón Sveinsson became widely known by the nickname Nonni. He is remembered as a children's writer and Jesuit priest, and his books drew heavily on his own early life in northern Iceland.

As a boy, he left Iceland for France in 1870. He later joined the Society of Jesus, and his writing helped make the world of his childhood familiar to readers far beyond Iceland.

Sveinsson's best-known stories follow the character Nonni and are closely tied to his memories of growing up with his brother. The books became especially popular in Iceland and in parts of Europe, giving his work a lasting place in children's literature.
