About the author

Born in Missouri in 1856, he grew up largely in Texas and went on to attend the United States Military Academy at West Point. He served as an army officer, but his career soon expanded far beyond conventional military life, taking him into a series of international adventures that later gave his writing its unusual energy and authority.

He is best known as the author of A West Pointer with the Boers (1903), a personal narrative drawn from his experience in the Second Boer War, where he fought with the Boer side and became associated with the Irish Brigade. The book stands out for its direct, eyewitness perspective and for the way it blends memoir, war reporting, and reflection.

Remembered as both a soldier and a writer, he led a life dramatic enough to seem almost fictional. He died in 1907, leaving behind work that still attracts readers interested in military history, travel, and the lives of restless adventurers.
