About the author

Born in Lexington, Kentucky, on November 2, 1885, John Wilson Townsend grew into one of the state’s notable literary historians. Archival records from the University of Kentucky and the Filson Historical Society describe him as a graduate of Transylvania University who went on to write extensively about Kentucky history and literature.

He is especially remembered for Kentucky in American Letters, a major anthology of Kentucky writing, along with books such as Kentuckians in History and Literature and a study of novelist James Lane Allen. His papers show how deeply involved he was with Kentucky’s literary world, preserving correspondence, research, and materials connected to the writers and public figures he studied.

Townsend died in January 1968. More than a simple compiler, he helped shape how Kentucky’s literary heritage was collected, organized, and remembered for later generations.
