Born in 1885 near Lexington, Kentucky, he studied at the University of Kentucky and later continued his education at Harvard. He went on to build his life in Lexington, writing books and articles centered on Kentucky history, literature, and notable figures.

His best-known books include Kentuckians in History and Literature, Kentucky: Mother of Governors, and the two-volume Kentucky in American Letters, 1784–1912. Archive collections and library records also describe him not only as a writer, but as a collector and book dealer with wide connections to Kentucky’s literary world.

His papers, preserved by institutions including the University of Kentucky, Eastern Kentucky University, and The Filson Historical Society, show how deeply involved he was with the state’s cultural history. He died in 1968, leaving behind a body of work that still matters to readers interested in Kentucky’s past and its literary tradition.
