About the author

Born in Ireland in 1826, John Wilson made his life in Portland, Oregon, where he became a successful merchant and an active civic figure. Sources consistently describe him as an avid collector whose private library reflected broad reading interests and serious care for books.

When he died in 1900, he left his personal collection of roughly 8,000 to 9,000 volumes to the Library Association of Portland, with the condition that the books be available free to the public. That bequest became the foundation of what is now known as the John Wilson Special Collections at Multnomah County Library.

Because several historical figures share this name, some biographical details are hard to confirm from the available sources. What stands out clearly is the scale of his book collecting and the lasting public value of the collection he left behind.
