About the author

Born in Portuguese West Africa in 1903 and raised partly in the United States, he built a long, remarkably varied writing career that stretched across pulp magazines, novels, and nonfiction. Over the decades he wrote fantasy, science fiction, horror, detective fiction, westerns, juvenile fiction, and historical works, earning a reputation as one of the most dependable and wide-ranging popular writers of his era.

He is especially remembered for his stories of Silver John, also known as John the Balladeer, a wandering musician who faces uncanny forces in the Appalachian Mountains. Those tales stood out for their strong sense of place, their use of regional folklore, and their warm but unsettling blend of music, myth, and supernatural danger.

Later in life he was closely associated with North Carolina, where his work and legacy remained influential among readers of fantasy and horror. He died in 1986, but his fiction continues to be rediscovered by fans who enjoy classic weird tales with a distinctly American voice.
