A North Carolina historian, lawyer, and former Confederate officer, he is best remembered for turning the state’s past into widely read histories and reference works. His books helped shape how generations of readers learned North Carolina history.

by John W. (John Wheeler) Moore
Born on October 23, 1833, at Mulberry Grove in Hertford County, North Carolina, he grew up in a prominent family, studied at the University of North Carolina, and trained in law. During the Civil War he served in the Confederate army, and after the war he returned to public and literary work.
He became known as a historian, author, and public figure in North Carolina. Among his best-known works are History of North Carolina and School History of North Carolina, books that brought the state's story to a broad audience, as well as his compilation of rosters of North Carolina troops who served in the Civil War.
Beyond history writing, he also worked as a lawyer and was active in state civic life. He died on December 6, 1906, and remains remembered chiefly for preserving and popularizing North Carolina's history in the late nineteenth century.
