John Taine

Writing as John Taine, Eric Temple Bell published science fiction while building a major career as a mathematician and teacher. Born in Scotland in 1883, he spent most of his life in the United States and became a professor at the California Institute of Technology.

Under his own name, Bell wrote influential popular books about mathematics, including Men of Mathematics. As John Taine, he turned to fiction, producing ambitious speculative novels that often drew on his scientific background and pushed beyond simple adventure plots.
