About the author

Born on September 27, 1875, John Stuart Hay was an English historian and author. He is chiefly remembered for The Amazing Emperor Heliogabalus (1911), often noted as the first full-length biography of the Roman emperor Elagabalus.

His life reached well outside the study of ancient history. During the First World War era, he was associated with the proposed "Hay Plan" during the Irish conscription crisis of 1918. After the war, he settled in Athens, where he worked as an antiquities dealer.

Hay died on April 26, 1949. Though not a widely known literary figure today, his work on Elagabalus has kept his name alive for readers interested in Rome, biography, and the more unusual corners of historical writing.
