About the author

Born in Norwich on November 18, 1807, and dying on April 1, 1897, John Stoughton was an English Congregational minister, historian, and author. After studying at Norwich Grammar School and later at Highbury Congregational College, he entered the ministry and became known not only as a preacher but also as a thoughtful writer on church life and religious history.

He is best remembered for his many books on Christianity in England, especially works dealing with Nonconformity, the Puritans, and the religious history of the seventeenth century. His writing often aimed to make complex church history readable and human, blending careful historical interest with a clear sympathy for the faith and people he described.

Alongside his historical works, he also wrote memoirs, essays, and devotional books, which helped him reach a broad readership in Victorian Britain. For listeners interested in older religious writing, his work offers both a vivid sense of the past and a window into the moral and spiritual concerns of his own age.
