Born in 1851, John Skinner was a Scottish minister, teacher, and biblical scholar who went on to serve as Principal and Professor of Old Testament Language and Literature at Westminster College, Cambridge. Reliable sources describe him as an ordained minister as well as an academic deeply involved in the study of the Hebrew Bible.

He wrote a number of scholarly works, including studies and commentaries on Genesis, Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel. His A Critical and Exegetical Commentary on Genesis, published in 1910 for the International Critical Commentary series, is especially noted for its lasting reputation in English-language biblical scholarship.

Skinner died in 1925. He is remembered as a careful, learned interpreter of scripture whose books helped shape modern study of the Old Testament for both students and general readers.
