1857–1922
A gifted schoolmaster and classical scholar, he wrote with deep knowledge of Latin literature and the long history of Westminster School. His books carry the voice of a patient teacher who cared as much about clear explanation as learned detail.
John Sargeaunt was an English classical scholar, historian, and schoolmaster born in 1857 and died in 1922. He was educated at Bedford School and University College, Oxford, and went on to teach at several schools before becoming a long-serving master at Westminster School. He was also known in his day as a strong teacher and a widely respected scholar.
Alongside his teaching, he published books on classical subjects and school history. His work included studies connected with Latin literature as well as books on Westminster, showing both his scholarly interests and his close ties to the school where he spent much of his career.
Sargeaunt seems to have been remembered not only for learning but for the way he shared it. That combination of scholarship and classroom experience helps explain why his writing can still feel useful and approachable to readers interested in classics, education, and English school history.
