About the author

Born near Carlisle, Pennsylvania, in 1783, John Sanderson became an American educator, journalist, and author. Sources consistently identify him as the editor of the early volumes of Biography of the Signers to the Declaration of Independence, the best-known work associated with his name.

Before and alongside his writing, he worked in education and contributed to periodical literature. Later in life, after travel in Europe, he published Sketches of Paris—also issued as An American in Paris—showing that his interests ranged beyond national history to observation and travel.

Sanderson died in Philadelphia on April 5, 1844. Although reliable sources confirm his career and publications, I could not confirm a suitable portrait image from the pages available here, so no profile image is included.
