About the author

Born in 1840 and later identified in the Church History Biographical Database as John Shanks Lindsay, he was part of the early Latter-day Saint community that made its way to Utah. He died in 1906, and modern library records consistently connect him with the name form "John S. (John Shanks) Lindsay".

Lindsay is chiefly remembered for The Mormons and the Theatre; or, The History of Theatricals in Utah, published in 1905. The book stands out because it does more than list events: it mixes historical detail with reminiscences, humor, and criticism, giving readers a sense of how closely entertainment, community life, and religion could intersect in early Utah.

That combination makes his writing especially appealing for listeners interested in regional history and the performing arts. Rather than writing as a distant observer, he appears to have written from inside the world he described, which gives his account an immediate, conversational feel.
