John S. (John Shanks) Lindsay

1840–1906

Best known for a lively early history of Utah theater, this 19th-century writer captured the Mormon stage with humor, opinion, and a strong sense of local color. His work remains a useful window into Salt Lake City’s entertainment world at the turn of the century.

About the author

John S. Lindsay, also known as John Shanks Lindsay, was born in 1840 and died in 1906. He is best remembered as the author of The Mormons and the Theatre; or, The History of Theatricals in Utah, published in Salt Lake City in 1905.

That book gives him a distinctive place in western cultural history. Rather than writing a dry record, he mixed historical detail with reminiscences and commentary, creating a vivid portrait of theatrical life in Utah and of the place entertainment held in Mormon communities.

Because confirmed biographical details are limited in the sources I found, it is safest to say that his lasting reputation comes mainly from this book and its firsthand perspective on Utah’s stage culture in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
