John Ross, born John Franklin Ross in 1957, was an American author, columnist, and activist. He studied at Amherst College and became widely known for Unintended Consequences, a long, controversial novel first published in the mid-1990s that mixed fiction with real historical events and figures.
That book became his signature work and developed a strong underground reputation, especially among readers drawn to debates over gun rights, gun control, and individual liberty. Outside his fiction, he also wrote regular internet columns and was involved in public life, including a 1998 run for Congress in Missouri.
Ross died in April 2022 at age 64. Remembered by admirers as a fiercely independent voice, he left behind a novel that continued to circulate well beyond its original publication and kept his name alive among devoted readers.
