Best known for bringing English history to life for ordinary readers, this Victorian historian wrote with unusual energy and focus on the people behind the politics. His most famous book, A Short History of the English People, helped reshape how the nation's story was told.

by John Richard Greene
Born in Oxford in 1837, John Richard Green was educated at Magdalen College School and Jesus College, Oxford. He was ordained and served in the East End of London, but ill health and a growing passion for historical writing gradually pulled him away from parish work.
Green became known for treating history as more than a record of kings, battles, and governments. In A Short History of the English People and later works, he emphasized social life, culture, and the experiences of ordinary people, which made his writing feel fresh and accessible to many readers.
He married the historian Alice Stopford Green and continued writing despite serious illness. He died in 1883, but his books remained influential for their vivid style and for widening the scope of what English history could include.
