About the author

Born in 1810 and active well into the late 19th century, John Randall became known as a Shropshire historian, local writer, and geologist. A study by the Shropshire Geological Society describes him as especially associated with Madeley and notes that he earned his living as a china painter at Coalport, work that helped shape his close interest in local materials and industry.

His books include The Severn Valley and History of Madeley, along with other works on local sport, rail travel, and the clay industries. That mix of subjects helps explain his appeal today: he wrote not as a distant scholar, but as someone deeply rooted in the landscape, trades, and everyday life of the district he described.

Randall lived an exceptionally long life, dying in 1910. From the surviving sources available here, he stands out as a vivid recorder of industrial and regional history in Shropshire rather than as a novelist, and his work remains valuable for readers interested in Ironbridge, Coalbrookdale, Coalport, and the wider Severn Valley.
