About the author

Born on 23 May 1872 in Tinonee, New South Wales, John Reay Watson was an Australian journalist and writer. Before making his name in literature, he worked as a bank clerk in Queensland and then joined major newspapers including The Sydney Morning Herald, the Melbourne Argus, and The Age.

His reporting career was adventurous in its own right. He was sent to China during the Boxer Rebellion as a war correspondent for The Age, and he later settled in London, where he continued to write. Alongside journalism, he published short stories, poetry, and novels, building a reputation for lively popular fiction.

Watson is remembered especially for his mystery and adventure writing, including The Hampstead Mystery, written with Arthur J. Rees. He died on 12 June 1944, leaving behind a body of work that links newspaper realism with the pace and suspense of early twentieth-century popular storytelling.
