A Victorian church scholar with a gift for Hebrew studies, he is best remembered for making the Psalms more accessible to students and general readers. His work joined careful scholarship with a clear, readable style that still appeals to listeners interested in biblical commentary and church history.
Born in Burdwan, Bengal, in 1823, John James Stewart Perowne became an English Anglican bishop, scholar, and teacher. He studied at Norwich School and Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, later building a reputation for his knowledge of Hebrew and the Old Testament.
Perowne taught at King’s College London, served at St David’s College, Lampeter, and was closely connected with Cambridge throughout his career. He was known as a commentator on the Psalms and also served as general editor of the Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges, helping shape biblical study for students and clergy.
Later in life he became Dean of Peterborough and then Bishop of Worcester. Alongside his church leadership, he remained a serious man of letters whose writing reflects both deep learning and a desire to explain difficult texts in a straightforward way.
