About the author

Born in Albany, New York, on July 1, 1868, he began in newspaper work in Albany and Hartford in the 1880s and early 1890s. He later became closely associated with The Survey and Survey Graphic, influential magazines focused on social questions, public policy, and reform, where he served in editorial leadership and wrote widely on civic and political life.

He also published books, including Americans by Choice in 1922, reflecting his interest in immigration and American identity. Archival and library records suggest a long career that connected journalism with public affairs, and his writing often aimed to help readers think through the practical challenges of democracy, cities, and social change.

He died in 1954. Although he is less widely remembered now than some of his contemporaries, his career shows how early 20th-century editors could shape national conversations not just by reporting events, but by interpreting what they meant.
