About the author

Born in 1860 and active in New York City, John Nicholas Luff became one of the most respected philatelists of his era. He was especially known for applying careful, scientific methods to the study of postage stamps, helping raise the standards of the hobby.

He also wrote for a wider reading public. Works such as What Philately Teaches show how he presented stamp collecting as more than a pastime: a way to learn history, geography, design, and close observation. His writing is clear and practical, which helps explain why it still interests readers today.

Luff died in 1938, but his influence lasted well beyond his lifetime. The American Philatelic Society's Luff Award, named in his honor, reflects the lasting importance of his work to stamp study and collecting.
