About the author

John N. Raphael, also known as John Nathan Percival Raphael, was born in Uruguay in 1868 and died in Paris in 1917. He built his career largely in France, where he worked as a journalist and correspondent for British periodicals while also writing criticism and drama.

He was noted for reporting on the Dreyfus case, and his writing often drew on French subjects and settings. Alongside journalism, he translated French works into English and published books of his own, including The Caillaux Drama and fiction such as Up Above.

Raphael's career had an appealing range: part reporter, part man of letters, and part dramatist. That mix gives his work a lively, cross-channel flavor, connecting English-language readers with the politics, culture, and literary life of early-20th-century Paris.
