About the author

Born in Whithorn, Scotland, on April 24, 1838, John Monro Gibson was the son of a United Presbyterian minister and later followed the same calling himself. He studied in Toronto and went on to serve as a minister and teacher, including lecturing in Hebrew and Greek exegesis at Montreal Theological College.

His ministry stretched across several countries. After work in Montreal, he served at Second Presbyterian Church in Chicago from 1874 to 1880, then moved to London, where he became minister of St John's Wood Presbyterian Church and remained there for many years. He was also a prominent church leader, serving as moderator of the Presbyterian Church of England and taking part in wider efforts toward cooperation among Free Churches.

As an author, Gibson is best remembered for sermons, religious essays, and biblical studies such as The Ages Before Moses, The Gospel of Matthew, and A Strong City and Other Sermons. His writing aimed to make serious Christian thought readable and useful for ordinary people, which helps explain why his work continued to circulate long after his death in 1921.
