About the author

Born in Scotland in 1769, John Malcolm left for India as a teenager and built a remarkably varied career in the service of the East India Company. Over the years he became known not just as a soldier, but also as a diplomat and administrator with deep knowledge of Indian and Persian affairs.

He wrote extensively from that experience, producing histories, memoirs, and political studies that helped shape how British readers understood India, Persia, and the expanding empire. His best-known books include works on Persia, Central India, and the political history of India, and they gave him a lasting reputation as an energetic man of action who also wrote with authority.

Malcolm was later appointed Governor of Bombay, and he died in 1833. Today he is remembered both for his literary output and for the large role he played in British imperial life in South Asia.
