About the author

Born in 1769 in what is now Northern Ireland, John Malcolm made his career with the East India Company and became known as a soldier, diplomat, and colonial administrator. He served in India and Persia, took part in major political and military events, and later rose to high office, including service as Governor of Bombay.

Malcolm was also a prolific writer. Drawing on his own experience, he published works on Central and South Asia, including studies of Persia and the history of India, which helped build his reputation in Britain as well as in imperial administration.

He died in 1833. Today he is remembered as one of the many British figures whose careers combined military power, diplomacy, and authorship during the expansion of the British Empire in Asia.
