A Scottish-born Australian evangelist and writer, he became one of the best-known revival preachers in Australia in the late 1800s. His book The Spirit-Filled Life kept his influence alive long after his early death.

by John MacNeil
Born in Scotland in 1854 and raised in Victoria, Australia, he studied at Ballarat College and the University of Melbourne before training for ministry at New College in Edinburgh. He was ordained as a Presbyterian minister in 1879 and soon became widely known for his energetic preaching and evangelistic tours.
From the early 1880s, he traveled extensively through Australia and helped shape a wave of Protestant revivalism. He also wrote The Spirit-Filled Life, a devotional work that remained his best-known book and helped introduce later readers to his teaching.
He died in Queensland in 1896 at just forty-two years old, while still active in ministry. Even with a short life, his preaching, writing, and public ministry left a lasting mark on Australian evangelical history.
