A Milwaukee Public Museum historian, he wrote a concise, readable account of Native peoples in Wisconsin and their long history in the region. His best-known work was completed shortly before his death in January 1951 and published a few years later.

by John M. Douglass
He was a member of the History Division of the Milwaukee Public Museum. The main published work clearly tied to him is The Indians in Wisconsin's History, a handbook on Wisconsin's Native peoples, their lifeways, and their experiences through French, British, and U.S. rule.
Available source material on his life is very limited, but multiple library and public-domain records agree that he died on January 26, 1951, shortly after finishing the manuscript of that book. It was later published by order of the Milwaukee Public Museum's Board of Trustees in 1954.
His writing is remembered for making regional history accessible to general readers, especially listeners and readers interested in Wisconsin history and Native American history.
