Born in Dorchester, Massachusetts, on April 15, 1814, John Lothrop Motley became known as an American historian, author, and diplomat. He studied at Harvard and later in Germany, experiences that helped shape his lifelong interest in European history and politics.

Motley is remembered above all for his major works on the Netherlands, especially The Rise of the Dutch Republic and History of the United Netherlands. These books won a wide audience and built his reputation as a lively popular historian who could turn complex political struggles into compelling narrative.

He also served the United States in diplomacy, including posts connected with Russia and later Austria. Motley died in Dorset, England, on May 29, 1877, leaving behind a body of historical writing that remained influential for many years.
