About the author

Born in Dorchester, Massachusetts, on April 15, 1814, he was educated at Boston Latin School and Harvard, then continued his studies in Germany. During his time abroad he became acquainted with Otto von Bismarck, an experience that later gave extra interest to his early novel Morton's Hope.

He is remembered chiefly for his major historical works on the Netherlands, especially The Rise of the Dutch Republic and History of the United Netherlands. Written with strong narrative drive as well as deep research, these books helped make him one of the best-known American historians of the 19th century.

His career also extended beyond literature. During the American Civil War era and after, he served as U.S. minister to Austria and later to Great Britain, combining public service with historical writing until his death in 1877.
