About the author

Born in Toronto in 1858, he built his career in journalism and became closely associated with two of the city’s leading newspapers, the Toronto Daily Star and the Toronto Globe. His work as a writer and editor gave him a strong place in Canadian public life, and he also wrote books, including George Brown for the Makers of Canada series.

Later in life, he entered politics and served in the Senate of Canada during the last decade of his life. That mix of journalism, authorship, and public service makes him an interesting figure for readers drawn to Canadian history and biography.

He died in 1935, leaving behind a career that connected the press, politics, and historical writing in early 20th-century Canada.
