by John Lavicount Anderdon
Born in Bristol on April 5, 1792, John Lavicount Anderdon was an English writer whose career took an unusual path. He entered commercial life while still young and later became a partner in the family-connected firm of Manning & Anderdon, but he eventually left business behind and devoted himself to writing.
His earlier books were especially noted for fishing and outdoor subjects, including work associated with angling on English rivers. In later life, his writing shifted strongly toward Christian and devotional themes, and he produced religious biographies as well as other spiritual works.
Anderdon was received into the Roman Catholic Church in 1850, a change that shaped much of his later writing. He died on March 8, 1874, leaving behind a body of work that spans practical sporting literature, biography, and religious reflection.
