About the author

Born in Middlesex on November 16, 1842, John Henry Ingram became an English biographer and editor whose name is most closely linked with Edgar Allan Poe. He grew up in Stoke Newington, a place he felt connected him in a small but meaningful way to Poe's early life.

Ingram is remembered for his determined efforts to gather letters, documents, and recollections about Poe at a time when Poe's image had been badly colored by earlier accounts. His studies and editions helped build a fuller picture of Poe, and his long interest in the subject eventually led to a substantial collection of Poe material that survives in archival holdings.

He also wrote on other literary figures, including Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Thomas Chatterton, and Christopher Marlowe. Ingram died in Brighton, England, on February 12, 1916, leaving behind a reputation as a hardworking literary editor whose enthusiasm helped preserve and reinterpret nineteenth-century literary history.
