About the author

Born in 1840 and dying in 1912, John Gerard was a Scottish priest of the Society of Jesus whose books and pamphlets ranged widely across Catholic life and thought. Surviving bibliographic records link him with works on natural history and evolution, religious instruction, and the history of English Catholicism, showing a writer interested both in ideas and in explaining them for a broad audience.

He is especially associated with books such as Science and Scientists, Modern Science and Ancient Faith, A Course of Religious Instruction for Catholic Youth, and Stonyhurst College, its life beyond the seas, 1592–1794 and on English soil, 1794–1894. Records also show that he wrote articles for the 1913 Catholic Encyclopedia, which fits with his role as a careful Catholic scholar and popularizer.

Although not as widely known today as some of his contemporaries, his work reflects a lively period when Catholic authors were engaging modern science, education, and historical controversy in print. For listeners interested in older religious nonfiction, he offers a mix of scholarship, argument, and plainspoken explanation.
