About the author

Born in Kennebunk, Maine, in 1800, he was educated at Bowdoin and Harvard and spent much of his early career as a teacher and school principal before moving more fully into writing. He became known for producing histories, biographies, and educational works aimed at a broad readership.

Much of his writing focused on American history and notable lives, often in an accessible, narrative style that suited both family reading and classroom use. Contemporary and later references describe him as an educator as well as a compiler of histories and biographies, which fits the practical, wide-ranging character of his books.

He died in Philadelphia in 1859. Though not as widely remembered as some of his contemporaries, his many popular histories and instructional books give a clear picture of a writer devoted to making knowledge readable and available to ordinary readers.
