About the author

Born in Glasgow on July 17, 1870, John Edgar McFadyen became a Scottish theologian and biblical scholar known for his work on the Old Testament. He later served as professor of language, literature, and Old Testament theology at the University of Glasgow.

He wrote for both students and general readers, and one of his best-known books, Introduction to the Old Testament, was designed to give a broad, readable guide to the subject rather than a highly technical study. He also produced translations of several books of the Bible in what he called "modern speech," showing his interest in making ancient texts easier for contemporary readers to understand.

McFadyen died in 1933. His books remain of interest to readers looking for thoughtful, accessible introductions to biblical literature and theology.
