About the author

Born in Glasgow on July 17, 1870, he became a Scottish theologian and Old Testament scholar who later taught at the University of Glasgow as professor of language, literature, and Old Testament theology. His work combined academic study with a strong interest in making biblical writing readable for ordinary audiences.

He is especially remembered for translations of several books of the Bible into what he called "modern speech." In works such as his versions of Job and Psalms, he aimed to preserve something of the original poetic movement as well as the meaning, giving his writing a literary quality that still stands out.

McFadyen also wrote books on the Old Testament for general readers and students, including The Approach to the Old Testament. He died in 1933. No suitable verified portrait image was confirmed from the sources checked here, so no profile image is included.
