An Irish-born bishop and historian, he wrote with the kind of careful scholarship that still appeals to readers interested in church history, liturgy, and the lives of earlier bishops. His work blends deep learning with a steady, readable style.

by John Dowden
Born in Cork on June 29, 1840, he became an Irish-born cleric who later rose to serve as Bishop of Edinburgh in the Scottish Episcopal Church. He is remembered not only for church leadership but also for his serious historical work, especially in ecclesiastical history.
His books show a lasting interest in liturgy, the church calendar, and the history of bishops and church institutions. Among the works associated with him are The Church Year and Kalendar and The Bishops of Scotland, which helped preserve and interpret parts of Anglican and Scottish church history for later readers.
He died on January 30, 1910. For modern listeners, his appeal lies in the combination of pastoral experience and patient scholarship: he wrote as someone deeply involved in the life of the church, but also committed to documenting its past with care.
