About the author

Born in North Stonington, Connecticut, in 1809, John Denison Baldwin built a career that moved through several worlds. He studied both law and theology, became a Congregationalist minister, and later turned to journalism, eventually editing and publishing the Worcester Spy in Massachusetts.

Beyond journalism, he was active in public life and served in the U.S. House of Representatives during the Civil War era. He is remembered today in literary and historical circles mainly for his nonfiction writing, especially books such as Ancient America and Pre-Historic Nations, which tried to make questions about early civilizations and human history accessible to general readers.

Baldwin died in 1883 in Worcester, Massachusetts. While some of his historical and anthropological ideas reflect the limits of 19th-century scholarship, his work remains a window into how Americans of his time tried to understand the ancient past.
