About the author

Born in Paisley on May 9, 1819, he studied at Glasgow University and later at Edinburgh before being licensed to preach in the Church of Scotland. He served as minister in places including Crieff and later became a well-known figure in Scottish church life, eventually serving as Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland in 1886.

Alongside his ministry, he built a strong reputation as a writer and teacher. He was appointed professor of Church History at New College, Edinburgh, and wrote several works on religious history and doctrine, including books on the Church of Scotland and on the Quakers. His writing was valued for being learned without losing sight of ordinary readers.

He died at St Andrews on September 1, 1893. Although he is remembered first as a minister and historian rather than a literary author in the modern sense, his work remains useful for readers interested in Scottish religious history and nineteenth-century church thought.
