About the author

Born in St. Petersburg in 1836 to a Boston merchant family, he returned to Massachusetts as a boy and later studied at Harvard College and Harvard Law School. A spinal condition kept him from military service, but it also pushed him toward the close study of campaigns, commanders, and strategy.

Alongside his legal career, he became one of the leading American military historians of the late 19th century. He co-founded the law firm that became Ropes & Gray, wrote widely respected works including The Campaign of Waterloo and The Story of the Civil War, and was active in historical and learned societies.

He died in Boston in 1899. His writing is remembered for being careful, analytical, and deeply informed by both legal reasoning and a lifelong fascination with military history.
