About the author

Born in Scotland County, North Carolina, in July 1874, he grew up in the rural setting that would later shape much of his poetry. He studied at Wake Forest College, wrote verse early, and went on to build a career that included journalism, law, and public service.

He became especially associated with North Carolina literary life through his poetry and his newspaper work in Charlotte. His best-known collection, Songs, Merry and Sad, appeared during his lifetime in 1906, and a second volume, Lyrics from Cotton Land, was published after his death.

Although he died in October 1907 at only 33, his reputation endured, and he has often been remembered as one of North Carolina's most beloved poets. His writing is still noted for its lyrical style, regional character, and affection for Southern life and scenery.
