About the author

Born in Ayr, Scotland, on 13 April 1872, he built a notable career as a forward with Queen's Park, Everton, and the Scotland national team before moving into management. In 1899 he became player-manager of Tottenham Hotspur and is especially remembered for guiding the club to FA Cup victory in 1901.

He is also of interest to readers as an early sports author. His book Association Football and How to Play It drew on direct experience of the professional game, helping explain tactics, positions, and play in a clear, practical way for a growing football audience.

He died in Glasgow on 20 April 1935. Today, he stands out as both an important football man and a writer who helped document the sport in its formative years.
