About the author

Born in Ontario on January 6, 1869, he moved to Winnipeg with his family in 1880 and was educated there, later earning a BA in modern languages from Manitoba College. He built his career in education in Manitoba and became known both as a teacher and as an editor of schoolbooks.

He served at different times as a school principal, inspector, and education official, and his name appears on a wide range of classroom texts used in Canadian schools. Among the works associated with him are readers, poetry and prose selections, geography books, and adaptations such as The Heroes; or, Greek Fairy Tales for My Children.

John Cameron Saul died on June 4, 1939. Although he is not widely remembered today, his work belonged to the everyday world of public education, where anthologies, readers, and teaching texts could influence thousands of young readers.
