About the author

Born on October 1, 1920, John C. Chapin served with the 4th Marine Division during World War II. After the war, he went on to a varied career that included work for the Episcopal Church in Michigan and Washington, D.C., and later service as a special assistant to George Romney at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

He also became known for his writing on Marine Corps history. He wrote Uncommon Men: The Sergeants Major of the Marine Corps and a number of monographs for the Marine Corps Historical Center, including works on major Pacific battles such as the Marianas campaign. His books are appreciated for their concise style and strong sense of lived military experience.

Chapin died on August 14, 2008, at age 87. Alongside his historical writing, he was remembered for long service in civic and cultural organizations, including as a trustee of the Philatelic Foundation.
