About the author

John Brown of Wamphray was a Scottish minister and author, probably born around 1610 and educated at the University of Edinburgh. He became minister of Wamphray in Annandale and was known among Presbyterian supporters of the Covenant for his learning, preaching, and theological writing.

After the restoration of episcopal church government in Scotland, Brown refused to conform and was removed from his parish in 1662. He later spent time in the Netherlands, where many Scottish dissenters found refuge, and continued to publish religious works. His books include practical and doctrinal writing aimed at helping readers think through faith, conscience, and Christian life.

He died in 1679. Though not a household name today, Brown remains of interest to readers of Scottish religious history and Reformed theology, especially for the way his writing reflects the pressures faced by ministers who would not abandon their principles.
