About the author

John W. Breukelman was an American biology educator, writer, and editor whose career was closely tied to Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia, now Emporia State University. Public records and university materials identify him as John William Breukelman (1901–1995), and Emporia State notes that he joined the faculty in 1929 and became widely respected for his work in biology and science education.

His writing appears to have focused on natural history, science teaching, and educational research. Records from Emporia State’s repository list a number of his studies on science education in Kansas, and surviving issues of The Kansas School Naturalist show him serving as editor and contributing material aimed at making science approachable for teachers and general readers.

Breukelman was also recognized beyond his own campus. Emporia State’s 1967 Kansas Master Teacher materials describe him as an inspiring teacher and researcher, and historical listings for the National Association of Biology Teachers place him among the organization’s presidents. Taken together, those sources suggest a career devoted not just to biology itself, but to helping others learn how to teach and enjoy it.
