About the author

Born in Ireland in 1869, he later made his home in Canby, Minnesota, where he was known not only as a writer but also as a businessman, mayor, and veterans' advocate. Contemporary records and memorial sources describe a life that ranged widely across public service, local politics, and military service.

His writing appears to have grown directly out of that experience. He is associated with books including With the 13th Minnesota in the Philippines and Soldiers of the Legion, works that reflect his time with the 13th Minnesota and, later, the French Foreign Legion during World War I. That mix of eyewitness detail and hard-lived experience gives his work much of its appeal.

He died in 1954. Even in brief historical references, he comes across as a larger-than-life figure: restless, outspoken, and deeply shaped by war, immigration, and public duty.
