About the author

Born in 1869, John Bowe became known in Minnesota as a businessman, civic figure, and veteran. Records from the Minnesota Historical Election Archive identify him as a candidate in state politics, and other historical sources connect him with Canby, Minnesota, where he was active in public life.

He is best remembered as the author of Soldiers of the Legion, Trench-Etched (1918), a book drawn from his service in the French Foreign Legion during World War I. Library and archive records also tie him to earlier military service in the Spanish-American War and the Philippine Insurrection, helping explain the strongly personal, soldier's-eye perspective of his writing.

Bowe died in 1954. What makes him interesting as an author is that his work grows directly out of an eventful life: immigrant, soldier, local leader, and memoirist all in one, writing not from a distance but from experience.
