John Bergh

A Swedish-speaking Finnish writer and journalist, he wrote novels and short fiction around the turn of the 20th century, often with a strong sense of place and history. His work includes historical fiction as well as later novels such as Yrsa and Rayski.

About the author

Born in Helsinki on August 10, 1872, John Arnold Bergh was a Finland-Swedish author who also worked in the newspaper press. He published fiction in the decades around 1900 and is remembered especially for novels and shorter prose.

Bergh studied medicine at the University of Helsinki, but illness forced him to leave his studies. After that he worked in different ways, including as a farmer, while continuing his literary career. He also wrote under the pen names Arnold, Mikael Sand, and Mikael Sanden.

His books often leaned toward the historical. One of his noted works is Efter ofreden (1910), and his later novels include Yrsa (1914) and Rayski (1915). He died in Porvoo in 1939.
