Born in Ohio in 1865, John Bennett became an American author and illustrator whose work ranged from historical fiction to children's literature. He wrote and illustrated books such as Master Skylark and Barnaby Lee, and he is often remembered for stories shaped by Black folk traditions from the South, especially material connected with Gullah culture.
Bennett made his home in Charleston, South Carolina, and is associated with the Charleston Renaissance. His writing was praised for its lively storytelling and distinctive atmosphere, and his background as an artist gave his books a memorable visual character as well.
He died in 1956. Today, he is remembered both as a creative storyteller for younger readers and as a literary figure who helped bring regional folk material to a wider audience.
